Utility Vehicles (UVs) are the most rapidly expanding segment in the Indian automotive market. Thanks to an apparent customer inclination towards SUVs across a wide price range, the Utility Vehicle segment has been recording an upward sloping sales trend over the past few years. However, during January 2019, sales of utility vehicles suffered a minor slow down. This was primarily related to rising fuel prices and the economic uncertainty prevalent in the country in the run up to the general elections.
The Indian market recorded 82,722 unit sales in January 2019, which is 3.57 percent less than the 85,840 unit monthly sales of January 2018. The market share of UVs also dropped 1.87 percent, hovering around the 30 percent mark in January 2019.
Despite the slowdown, manufacturers have been introducing multiple models in the UV segment over the past few months. Some of the recent launches include the Tata Harrier, Nissan Kicks, and Mahindra XUV300. Meanwhile, there are a few much awaited launches in the pipeline as well, from companies like Hyundai, Kia and MG Motors.
In January 2019, the best selling SUV in India was the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, which clocked a monthly sales figure of 13,172 units. Thanks to the Brezza, Maruti’s UV market share stands tall at 28.34 percent. It is worth noting that none of the Vitara Brezza’s competitors – Nexon, EcoSport and XUV300, managed to reach close to the said sales mark.
Meanwhile, spot for the second best selling SUV in the country was occupied by the Hyundai Creta, which sold 10,314 units in January 2019. Despite recently launched competitors like the Tata Harrier and Nissan Kicks, the Creta has managed to hold onto its market share and is even outselling much cheaper compact SUVs in the country. The Mahindra Bolero, which enjoys a significantly strong following in rural parts of the country, was the third best selling SUV with 7,998 units sold.
The Maruti Ertiga, which recently received the second generation update in India, was the best selling MUV, with a monthly sales figure of 6,352 units. Meanwhile, the Toyota Innova Crysta accumulated 6,283 unit sales, securing the number 5 spot in the list of best selling UVs in India.
