Unwrapped: The Gr010 Le Mans Hypercar From Toyota Gazoo Racing

The 2021 FIA world endurance championship will be favored with the best of Toyota Gazoo Racing. That, in other words, will be the GR010 Le Mans Hypercar. Cardinal behind the challenge the car will mount against new competitors shall be the TS050 Hybrid. This will, in fact, be a racing avatar of the soon-to-be-launched hypercar road car. The power train tech will leave rivals coughing up dust!

The prototype racer will be hard to top. Developed jointly by hybrid power train specialists at Higashi-Fuji, Japan, and headquarter engineers in cologne, Germany, the racer has taken one-and-a-half years to attain its near-perfection. Incorporated is a power train (four-wheel drive), which, coupled with a 3.5 lite V6 twin-turbo engine, packs quite a punch. When the 268 bhp motor-generator unit combines with the turbo engine to give 671 bhp to the rear wheels, the performance is not short of stellar. A product of DENSO and AISIN AW, the motor-generator unit gives added advantage to the front axle. 

The GR super sport hypercar, present at the ceremonial trophy return at Le Mans 2020, is the catalyst for the racing prototype.

Looking to repeat their triumphal processions of the 2019-2020 world championship and le man’s campaign Toyota Gazoo Racing enters its ninth season in WEC with the driver line-up unchanged.  Behind the wheels of the number 7 GR010 hybrid shall be world champions Kamui Koyabashi, Jose Maria Lopez, and Michael Conway. The entry number 8th will be participating with Kazuki Nakajima, Brendon Hartley, and Sebastien Buemi. Test and reserve driver position will remain unchanged, with Nyck De Vries at the helm.

Relative to the TS050 HYBRID model that preceded it, the new GR010 HYBRID will be not only 32 percent less powerful, but also heavier by 162 kg. Consequently, the lap times at le mans will be slower by 10 seconds. Nonetheless, the dimensions are bigger this time around, at length longer by 250 mm, width wider by 100 mm, and height higher by 100 mm.

The single MGU on the front axle will bear the burden of expectations, as Toyota Gazoo Racing will be entering the fray sans a rear motor-generator unit. This has put the responsibility on the team’s shoulder that full-hydraulic brakes at the rear as also a starter motor be added to the GR010 HYBRID.

Breathtaking characteristics include aerodynamics originating from computational fluid dynamics software, as also derived from wind tunnel testing. With a bow to the new regulations, there’s just one homologated bodywork package, which comes with only one aerodynamic device (adjustable). The same set of specifications shall thus be spearheading the GR010 hybrid challenge at the high and low downforce circuits. Modification of aerodynamics will be courtesy of an adjustable rear wing.

As per the official statement issued by Rob Leupen, Team Director, Toyota Gazoo Racing, the Le Mans Hypercar category points out a new era. It is with a different philosophy that the team will be taking on new rivals. Previous WEC performances have been near-perfect and the team is aware the onus for primed capabilities depends on the best strategy, unmatched operations, and swift drivers. Albeit their superlative previous WEC performances, team Toyota Gazoo Racing is not resting on their laurels.
