Japanese car maker Nissan entered the Indian market in 2010. It however failed to gather momentum in the domestic car market, which is dominated by the likes of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. Nissan now plans an SUV onslaught in the country to crack the market and give a tough fight to competitors like Hyundai, Mahindra, Tata and Ford.
Nissan`s India Operations President, Thomas Kuehl, informed Times of India (TOI) that SUVs will form the core of the company`s comeback strategy. With India`s growing love for SUVs and rugged vehicles the company plans to cash in on this new trend.
With a market share of less than 1.5 percent, Nissan sold around 53,000 units in FY2017 -18. Nissan will soon be introducing the Kicks compact SUV to challenge the likes of Mahindra Scorpio, Hyundai Creta and Renault`s Duster. With the Indian government making the import route attractive for 25,000 units annually without homologation, the Kicks will likely be brought in as a fully built import.
The company is also evaluating its other products like the Pathfinder SUV, Nissan Terra and the updated X-Trail SUV for the domestic market.
