Maruti Suzuki appears to be working on a 6-seater crossover based on its Ertiga MPV. This new model, called the XL6, is expected to be launched in India on August 21, 2019. A few spy shots of the Maruti XL6 have already surfaced on the Internet, giving us an idea about how this new model will look like.
Maruti designers have clearly done significant work in differentiating the XL6 from the Ertiga, especially at the front. As a result, it is not just a beefier version of the Ertiga with black body cladding and faux skid plates. Instead, the XL6 comes with a new front fascia, including an upright nose, a lifted hood, a trapezoidal grille with chrome elements in the middle, and a dual tone bumper with skid plates. The headlamp assemblies too are all new and come with LED daytime running lights that seamlessly merge with the chrome inserts of the grille in the centre.
The side and rear profiles do look clearly inspired by the Ertiga. However, the Maruti XL6 comes with a higher ride height, prominent roof rails, and black plastic cladding. The spy shots also reveal black ORVMs and alloy wheels, which point towards the possibility of a dual-tone colour scheme on higher trim levels, with a contrasting roof colour.
On the inside, the Maruti XL6 crossover will come with all black interiors, while the dashboard design will be similar to what we have seen on the Ertiga. The biggest highlight of the interiors will be the seating layout. The second row of seats in the XL6 will be captain seats, making the crossover a 6-seater and enhancing the luxury on offer on the inside.
Powering the Maruti XL6 will likely be a BS-VI compliant version of Maruti’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Additionally, an automatic transmission option will likely be added at a later date. It is also worth noting that Maruti won’t be launching a diesel version of the XL6, in-line with its plans of discontinuing its diesel range of cars in leau of the stricter emission standard coming into effect from April 2020.
