India`s home grown auto maker Mahindra has tasted success with the new generation Thar SUV. Now, after the model first went on sale on October 2, 2020, Mahindra & Mahindra has announced that the all-new off-roader has earned over 39,000 bookings. In January 2021 alone, the model was continuously raking in bookings and bagged over 6,000 bookings. During the FY2021 Q3 earning call, Mahindra revealed the information in a media interaction and also disclosed that every day the SUV receives an average of 200-250 bookings.
Furthermore, Mahindra & Mahindra also disclosed that about 45 percent of bookings were made for the new-generation Thar automatic models. That’s undoubtedly a large number and goes on to illustrate the popularity that the new automatics have garnered and were first launched on the SUV. The new Thar with the automatic option is more suitable to drive in the city.
Once you remember the elevated waiting time the Thar has, the high booking numbers are also important. Depending on the engine, transmission, and variant combination, the off-roader currently commands an average waiting period of around five months. According to some dealerships, the delivery time is even longer, going up to eight months in some metros. Mahindra announced back in December 2020 that it was ramping up production at the plant to meet the heavy demand for SUV.
Under the hood the new Thar is available with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol and the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines are coupled with manual and automatic transmissions and come with a range of off-road capabilities and features. In fact, the 4×4 option comes as standard on the Thar. In the Global NCAP safety ratings, the SUV also managed to score four stars. The price of the new generation Mahindra Thar starts from INR 12.10 lakh and goes up to to INR 14.15 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi).
