Mahindra and Mahindra will soon discontinue the Thar SUV from the Indian market. However, before doing this, the automaker has launched a special edition version, called the Thar 700, which will essentially include the final 700 units of the current-gen Thar to be ever produced. This limited edition version has been priced at Rs. 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). As a result, the Thar 700 is costlier by around Rs. 50,000 in comparison to the standard Thar CRDe 4WD, on which the special edition model is based.
The Thar 700 commemorates 70 years of Mahindra’s heritage in the automotive industry. The company gained popularity through its early-days 4×4 SUVs in India. The Thar too is essentially an evolved version of those 4×4 SUVs of the yesteryear’s. It thus looks fitting to commemorate the company’s 70-year anniversary with a special-edition model of the vehicle that has directly involved from its most popular segment.
Cosmetically, Mahindra designers have tried to distinguish the Thar 700 from the regular models through a new set of 15-inch, 5-spoke alloy wheels, black decals on the bonnet lid, a badge on the side fender with the signature of Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group, and a silver finish on the front bumper. The special edition model is available in two colours: Napoli Black and an all new shade of Aqua Marine. Meanwhile, the only change on the inside includes leatherette seat covers with the Thar badge embossed below the headrests.
No mechanical changes have been made to the Thar 700. As a result, it continues to draw power from a 2.5-litre CRDe diesel engine that is mated to a 5-speed gearbox and a 4×4 drive system. The special edition model does get ABS as standard, but misses out on other safety features like dual airbags, seat belt pretensioners and rear parking sensors.
It is worth noting that Mahindra has already started working on the next-gen Thar, which has also been spotted testing on public roads in the country. The manufacturer is expected to unveil this new model of the Thar at the Auto Expo next year in Greater Noida.
