Hyundai Completes 25 Years In India, Sells 9 Million Cars Since Inception

It’s celebration time for Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) as they complete 25 years of service this year in the Indian market. Hyundai undoubtedly is the second-largest car manufacturer in India. Besides this, the automaker also bags the position of being the largest exporter of passenger cars in the country. From the time of establishment, Hyundai has succeeded to sell over 9 million vehicles in India. In the year 2020, HMIL managed to export as many as 3 million locally produced cars from India to nearly 88 countries.

The foundation of Hyundai motor India Limited (HMIL) which is a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Company, dates back to 6th May, 1996 in Irungattukottai in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. 

S S Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. expressed his joy in these celebrations. Commenting about their journey as a company, he feels proud to have evolved in the Indian Automotive Industry which focuses and strives towards sustainable development. In view of supporting and protecting their global vision ‘Progress for Humanity’, Hyundai assures to produce automobiles that are backed by advanced features and technology admired by the customers. S S Kim also spoke about their strong determination to ensure a greener future thus leading to betterment of societies and communities. 

Though HMIL was founded in 1996, it began its production from the year 1998 at the Sriperumbudur plant. This manufacturing plant was the first integrated unit for manufacturing outside Korea. Following this was the launch of their first production vehicle that almost helped Hyundai in adhering to the Indian markets. Hyundai Santro was the first hatchback model manufactured by Hyundai. This model gained immense response from the users which then led to manufacturing of the hatchback Getz which was later replaced by i20 thus creating a trend for hatchbacks in the country. 

Hyundai created it’s image in every kind wherein Creta, Hyundai’s compact SUV was launched in 2015 and continues to be the best-selling model till date. In terms of figures Hyundai’s Creta manages to sell 12,000 to 13,000 units per month. 2020 was a great year for Hyundai in spite of the pandemic as there were in all 1,80,237 units being sold in the country thus making Hyundai the top SUV brand in India. Creta, Venue and the Tucson were few of the models that managed to offer high sales to the company this year. In 2020, the Venue compact SUV got additional technological features like Intelligent Manual Transmission iMT which was the first of its kind in the country with a clutch-free function. 

At present, Hyundai has in all 11 models in its line-up right from the naive Santro hatchback, to the company’s flagship model, the Hyundai Tucson and  fleet-only Xcent Prime car. These 11 models in India have a price range starting from Rs. 4.67 lakh, going up to Rs. 27.33 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi.
