The upcoming all-electric version of the Maruti WagonR might be priced under the Rs 7 lakh price bracket. This will make it the most affordable electric car available in the country. The only other affordable electric hatchback on sale in India is the Mahindra e2o, which will soon be discontinued due to the upcoming stricter safety regulations. This will make the Maruti WagonR the only electric car in India under Rs 10 lakh.
The WagonR electric was previously likely to be priced around Rs 10 lakh. However, Maruti has now reportedly managed to cut the price tag by close to 25 percent, thanks to heavy localization of the WagonR electric, along with the incentives provided by the Government of India under the FAME (faster adoption and manufacturing of hybrid and electric vehicles) scheme. Industry experts suggest that the FAME subsidy for electric cars can range between Rs 1.24 lakh to Rs 1.38 lakh. Additionally, authorities are said to be working on the FAME 2.0 initiative, which is likely to increase this subsidy rate for electric cars.
Not much is known about the upcoming Maruti WagonR electric yet. However, we do know that it is likely to get a different design than the petrol powered third-gen model that was launched recently in India. Maruti has been testing the WagonR electric in the country using the Japan-spec WagonR, which is larger in size and thus offers more cabin space. However, the company has revealed that it is targeting a driving range of close to 200 km on a single charge.
